New product used in posterior heel cord treatment.
March 11, 2011
By: Michael Barbella
Surgeons who gathered in Florida recently for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ 69th Annual Scientific Conference got to “test drive” a new endoscopic product from Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corporation. The Plainsboro, N.J.-based company showcased its Endoscopic Gastroc Release System (EGR) at the four-day event in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In a news release, the company described the system as a disposable device with an articulating blade that allows surgeons to selectively cut soft tissues. The device is designed for use in the surgical treatment of posterior heel cord, or equinus, contracture, a condition that limits ankle motion (most often due to the contraction or tightness of the calf muscle). Surgical treatment of this condition involves the recession of selected tissues of the calf muscle, composed of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscle complex, according to Integra. Traditionally performed as an open procedure, the recession of the gastrocnemius aponeurosis can be performed endoscopically through a small incision, minimizing trauma to the area and leaving patients with a smaller, less visible scar. “We’ve had excellent surgeon feedback on the EGR System,” said Pete Ligotti, vice president of marketing for Integra Extremity Reconstruction. “The selective cutting provided by the retractable blade system and the visualization have exceeded expectations, and have helped to limit uncertainty when performing the procedure. We’re pleased that we gave surgeons an opportunity to try out the device.” Gastrocnemius recession increasingly is being used by orthopedic surgeons as a component in the surgical treatment of posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, diabetic foot ulcers, symptomatic acquired flatfoot, and bunions. These disorders, Integra claims, affect tens of thousands of patients annually. The EGR System is sold by Integra’s Extremity Reconstruction sales group, which focuses on lower extremity function, upper extremity fixation, tendon protection, peripheral nerve repair/protection and wound repair. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons conference, which was held March 9-12, enabled physicians worldwide to discuss the most current techniques and technology for treating deformities, diseases and injuries of the foot and ankle.
